Pollution in the seas throughout the world is a problem that significantly affects marine species, navigation, fishing, aquaculture, energy production and us. There are large concentrations of plastic and garbage in some parts of the oceans such as the well-known 'Pacific Garbage Patch that is located between Hawaii and the state of California located between the coordinates 135 ° to 155 ° W and 35 ° to 42 ° N with an estimated area of 710,000 km ^ 2
When doing a thorough investigation we find that currently only one project is applied which motivated us to create something from scratch with a shared purpose, to reduce the amount of plastic in the oceans to preserve the ecology.
After having read and taken into account various factors directly and indirectly related to marine pollution we agree to develop a prototype consisting of a 5m x 3m compartment with a height of 1.5m which will be submerged on the surface of the Sea anchored to the bottom of the sea. This prototype has the purpose of collecting marine waste and has the peculiarity that it is completely autonomous and does not consume any type of energy, but works with the force of marine currents, when a very strong current approaches, they will open the gates of the device letting garbage inside and when the force of the tide decreases, it will close the gates and store the waste collected in a kind of network. The device will repeat that same task each time a current is presented with sufficient force to open the floodgates.
To reduce the amount of garbage that accumulates in the ocean, we decided to focus on the coasts, since it is known that 80% of the pollution of the oceans by plastic comes from land sources.
We would be delighted to participate in the following Space Apps, since we are convinced that NASA is an essential part of the improvement of the planet and we share goals with it.
