The Challenge | To Bloom or Not to Bloom

Your challenge is to solve the mystery behind algal blooms! What factors cause blooms in some water bodies but not others, and how can we better predict their occurrence to prevent harm to aquatic and human life?

No Flow shall ever be impure

To find a cure for the disease of algae by diagnosing the affected area and its atmosphere

No Flow shall ever be impure

BACKGROUND:

Participating in "To bloom or not to bloom" right after seeing algae, growing near my water tank is something interesting NASA gave me. i just have a semester course of applied remote sensing where we use SAR-MODISS(terra) data to measure the temperature and chlorophyll a concentration. So, the project is one my interest from my home to my university.

DATA USED:

NASA ocean colour data, Landsat-8 data, all sources were great to discover. but i have only used few of them as per my flexibility and ease. Oceancolor.nasa is something i am grateful and will always be. Landsat-8 gave me the trend flow of algae. thanks to Landsat-8. you are great! National centers for coastal ocean science(NCCOS) opened me a door to know what we are ignoring in the shape of a pure water commitment to world.

Software used:

Whatsapp, snap tool, Microsoft Excel.

Hardware used:

HP(Core i5, 8th genearation),Water tank, phone camera for capturing pictures of algae contained with my tank.

Analysis:

Certain temporal analyses are done on different seas to find a trend for growth of algae depending on temperature or areas. Due to these analyses did on the data downloaded using NASA ocean colour data, i approached at some theoretical answers to my question of bloom in the view of my own home, inhabiting the green friend. (updated)

Theoretical approaches:

  1. The shadows seem to be areas, most affected by algae
  2. Extreme sides where water flow is dormant seems to be growing Phytoplankton
  3. The flow or centre lines are free of greenish plant
  4. After 2011 ‘chlorophyll a’ concentration seems exponentially increasing(sewage?)

Theoretical remedies:

  1. To install motors in the water where it is stagnant (i.e. water filter bodies, at shores of river) to keep a gradient
  2. To keep the water exposed to direct light to kill shadows and coolness
  3. Proper water drainage

Commercial Benefits:

  1. Healthy and pure water
  2. Can save water impurity
  3. Can save atmosphere
  4. Marine life can be saved from catastrophe
  5. Filter companies can boost-up
