Abstract:

According to NASA data and RelifWeb, in the sub-Saharan desert area, it is very common to have flooding, which causes political, social, health and even food instability. The big issue with flooding is that the water from rainfall cannot be properly filtered to the soil or evaporated from the area where it falls; causing its stagnation in inhabited places, taking months for the water level to drop.

In 2012, Nigeria experienced one of its largest floods in a century, destroying assets worth nearly US$10 billion. In Mozambique, one of the poorest countries in the world, floods in 2013 were estimated to cost over US$500m – nearly 9% of GDP. These figures are significant, especially when considering that this money could have been invested in other developmental goals.

A software is designed using NASA's databases such as contours, precipitation, solar radiation, and population density in order to determine a suitable route of deviation of the water taking advantage of the local geography and using photo water pumps strategically placed in the region. Evacuation routes can be planned using the software and the deviated water can be used by the local community for any activity instead of causing a natural disaster for several days and human deaths. Using the computer program, the local government, civil protection, NGOs and International organizations can help the most vulnerable populations in the face of the floods they suffer.

There are millions of people in need because of the floods in Africa, with technology there are big chances to seize natural phenomena disasters and instead of leaving complete regions devastated, whole communities can take advantage of it and have large quantities of water at their disposal.

We are Flood Off a multidisciplinary team that seeks to create viable solutions to current problems; our solution is to analyze the contours in the most vulnerable areas that suffer floods, find a safe path where all that water could go through gravity to take it to an agricultural area or find a point where all that water is capable of concentrate to form a body of water. The team has been divided into different tasks, including data collection and analysis, algorithm modeling for information processing and creation of a platform from which you have access to this data.
