Global Nominee

The Challenge | Smash your SDGs!

Your challenge is to develop creative solutions that use Earth observations to address the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and foster sustainable development worldwide. Use NASA and other Earth observing satellites’ data as well as information generated by crowd-sourcing and in-situ measurements to create practical applications that support environmental and societal policy across water, health, food security and/or land use domains.

S-LIGHT: CONVERTING NOISE TO ELECTRICAL ENERGY

S-light aims to make use of noise as it is a byproduct of human activities that is not utilized as a form of energy. S-light can give ample and consistent supply of electricity to families in rural areas with inadequate access to this resource.

Voltage 5

FUTURE PLANS:

We intend to make this device into reality. It was designed to help children all around the world to have an affordable source of light to encourage them to study. By charging S-light in a noisy place and bringing the battery at home, students will be able to do their homework under a well-lit light.

We also plan to upscale the device to be used in other infrastructures such as the field lights in airports, streetlights, stadium lights, concert lights, etc. These infrastructures are located in loud places making it a suitable location for our innovation. By using noise, electricity is conserved and the noise around the surroundings is reduced.

This device could be further improved by increasing the area of the speaker and the capacity of the battery to generate more energy. We also want to lower the decibel required for the battery to charge to make it more usable in areas that are not usually loud. This way, we will be able to help address SDG goals 3, 7, 9, 11, and 12 and with your help, there is no doubt that we will be able to give light to those who need it and expand its application.
