The Challenge | The Art Side of the Moon

Fifty years ago, generations were inspired when humans made a giant leap and walked on the moon. Today, NASA is committed to returning to the moon and beyond! Your challenge is to create an artistic work to communicate, inform, or inspire others about humanity’s return to the moon.

Our Earth is limited by our resources, like water, fossil fuels etc. One that bothers so many who are living in the cities and that is land. The cost to buy an apartment in these cities has become a major headache, especially in cities like Hong Kong. The average cost to buy an apartment is $1,547.31 per square foot. Getting a place to live has already become one of the biggest problems, but how about the dead? While there are ways to settle the remainings of our loved ones like ashes scattering, however, what if there is a way that we can get to keep the entirety of the remainings without occupying a space on earth?

That is the moon. Our closest stellar object, 1/4 the size of earth that is so silently sitting there, unused.

Our challenge is to create a safe and harmonious environment on the moon for our ancestors where they can enjoy space and peace. We are going to set up a highly scalable and mobile space cemetery where we keep the cremated ashes of our ancestors in a pressurized glass. While we are sending our loved ones to a distant place, we are also receiving live feed from the cameras in the structure that we built.

Utilizing laser beam and 5G technology, HD live feeds of the ancestors' relics unit could be sent in real time to our mobile-based web application. Not only are we able to visit and pay respect to them, our AI powered live chat system gives us a chance to interact with them just like how they behaved in the past.

Personas are created after processing the conversation histories of the deceased, such that we are creating an experience that can closely resemble the character, so that users can feel the closest touch from their loved ones. (Currently we are using Google Dialogflow as our NLP engine)

Not only do we hope that our loved ones could rest safely in a place that is far from disturbance, we also hope this idea could also pave the way for the potential commercial space tourism. An ecosystem of residential and entertainment could be built on the moon so that travelers could pay a visit to the Moon Shrine for their loved ones, while enjoy a relaxing vacation on the moon.
