By combining the atmospheric aesthetic of space with the intricaciesof sound,we wanted to capture people’s imagination, in order to inspire and educate about NASA’s past, present and future. We created an immersive 360 experience, available online and as VR.Visuals were created using NASA models, textures and our own artwork, accompanied by a piece of music we wrote which takes vocal clips to tell the story of our relationship with moon and space; from the launch of Apollo 11 to the plans for the first woman on the moon by 2024. This track is built up with instrumental tracks we wrote combined with curious space sounds available from the NASA audio library.
We made sure to include voices of females in the industry such as astronaut Jeanette Epps and Dianne Milner, who has worked at the Johnson Space Center since Apollo 11 and still does today, to inspire young women into the field.
Future Ideas
We want to adapt our audio into a soundscape for our prototype, bringing in aspects to make it more uniquely generated and interactive. This could be by attaching different sounds to different objects which trigger when they come close to you. The user could be given a dashboard before they enter the experience to customise it - by choosing bits of space 'stuff' they want in their scene and/or selecting which types of audio they want to listen to. This could also allow it to be adapted into a more calming experience which could then be used as a relaxation / anti-anxiety tool.
Challenges faced
- limited to only NASA materials
- couldn’t find appropriate data for sonification
- time
- interactivity in VR is hard
- too many ideas
