The Challenge | Build a Planet

Your challenge is to create a game that will allow players to customize the characteristics of a star and design planets that could reasonably exist in that star system. Ensure that this game provides an educational experience for players!

3D Modelling of Planets based on various physical and chemical characteristics

Potato Planets

Potato Projects

In essence, the projects asks the user for data - both physical and chemical. And then a machine learning algorithm predicts the temperature on the planet and its closest relative out there. Then it also renders a 3d model representation of the created planet.

We actually wanted to gamify it by making tasks - for instance, you would have to recreate a 3d model of mars by changing the various parameters on the screen. It would be like a puzzle to learn astronomy.

Indeed, this would be interesting for people who want to play around and discover the correlations between the different properties of the planet. The most interesting aspect is that they can see their creation in a visual way based on the parameters they change. Hopefully a project like this can inspire and intrigue people on the topic of astronomy.

The values at the top are the properties of our Sun - we wanted to see how the new planet would behave in our solar system.

We haven't included much of the units, here are some:

  • All Temperatures - Kelvin
  • Stellar Metallicity - dex
  • Stellar Radii - Solar Radii
  • Stellar Mass - Solar Mass
  • Planet Mass - Earth Mass
  • Planet Radii - Earth Radii
  • Distance - parsec

----------------------------------------

Things to Improve on:

  • Find any more data on other minor elements in planet and atmospheric composition.
  • Take gravitational pull into account when rendering the 3d model

This project that was a great deal of fun to build from scratch!
